T&T has just finished playing their World Cup football qualifying match against Bahrain, in Bahrain, and after a very exciting second half, won 1-0. The Soca Warriors are going to Germany in 2006! A small T&T contingent (including T&T’s President, Maxwell Richards and the First Lady, Jean Ramjohn-Richards) were in Bahrain to support the team, the Trinbagonians who remained at home also lent their support in a very real way. It’s like Carnival here: people celebrating in the streets, spilling over from their workplaces, homes and favourite liming spots, cell phones glued to their heads, huge smiles on their faces. All’s right with the world, at least for a while…despite the fact that there are rumours circulating that the Bahrainian “fans” are stoning the T&T team, making them unable to leave their locker rooms…
This just in from 95.1FM – Colin Murray is their correspondent in Bahrain and phoned in a report confirming that the Bahrainian supporters are playing just as dirty as the team did, ripping apart the stadium seats and throwing them onto the field. Now, is this really behaviour worthy of the spirit of the World Cup?
